2011 Elections
Elections take place from 11/7/2011 to 11/11/2011 (12 noon). Check your MCCC email for voting instructions.
President: Rhoda McFadden (incumbent)
I am running again for President of the Union because I believe that I still bring value to the job.  I have over 30 years of experience with our union, the last 12 as President; plus I am one of the last originators of the Union which means that I am one of the few people to hold our institutional memory.  That is important to me as a historian but it has also been very significant in the day to day operation of the Union.  It allows me to say, “You can't do that; it has never been a past practice."  My record includes 2 major contracts, 2 reopeners and a health care negotiation, all of which have been accomplished in a positive attitude of shared problem solving.    Given that our colleagues at Bucks were without a contract for the last year and a half before reaching an agreement mid-October, and CCP is also beyond their contractual expiration date, I think our Union is doing well under my leadership.  But, in the end, I have had a lot of help and I want to publically thank all my colleagues on the Executive Committee who have been marvelously supportive.

First Vice President: Mark Amdahl
Since 2001, I have been the Arts and Humanities Representative to the Faculty Union. During that time I have tried to be an effective spokesperson for the concerns of individual faculty members as well as for the division as a whole. Over these ten years I have also taken on more responsibilities, including the role of co-chief negotiator for the most recent contract. I feel that if I am elected to the position of Vice-President, I can continue to grow as a union leader and serve a wider range of constituents.

Secretary: Pat Rahmlow (incumbent)
During my 13 years with MCCC, I have experienced many aspects of the College. I have taught at both Central and West campuses, both in the classroom and online. Each of these areas has some unique needs as well as basic similarities. For the past 12 years, I have been a member of the Executive Committee. These experiences were beneficial as a member of the core development committee and most recently as a member of the Curriculum Committee.  The Secretary is a permanent member of the Meet and Discuss committee. The continuity that my long-term service to the Union provides has been invaluable during contract negotiations and as a part of the Meet and Discuss committee. In addition to meeting minutes, the Secretary is responsible for elections, the Union web site, maintaining the Union’s constitution and contract clarifications. My experience as an Associate Professor of Computer Science provides the skills needed to meet these responsibilities. I have been a member of several of the contract negotiating teams. Contract negotiation is a challenging experience, requiring the team to strike a delicate balance between all of the Union’s constituencies. I strive to meet that challenge, considering the needs of full-time faculty, part-time faculty, teaching faculty, librarians, counselors, advisors, online faculty, classroom faculty, West campus members, Central campus members, tenured and non-tenured faculty. Each group has unique needs that must be considered.  If  re-elected I will continue to serve all the members of the Union, striving to meet their needs and concerns in a fair and equitable manner.

Secretary: Tracey Brown
It has been an honor to serve on the Faculty Union Executive Committee for the past three years.  As the first West Campus Part-time Representative, I have been active in defining and expanding the role.  Through my consistent attendance of Union Executive Committee meetings and “Meet and Discuss” meetings, I learned the structure, operation, and priorities of the MCCC Faculty Federation.  I have heard the concerns of the Part-time, West Campus constituents and provided timely and thorough feedback and answers.  By attending numerous New Faculty Training sessions, at both West and Central campuses, I have assisted in bringing new members to the union.  Beyond my union work, I have been actively engaged in the life of the college.  In addition to teaching multiple sections of psychology each semester, I have assumed leadership roles in various positions.  Since 2007, I have been a member of the Part-time Faculty Advisory Committee.  At the end of the 2010-2011 academic year, the committee re-organized its structure and elected me as a co-chair.  As an extension of this role, I helped to develop the “Part-Time Faculty Newsletter”.  Besides contributing several pieces, I served as editor of the newsletter for the 2010-2011 academic year.  I was excited to see the positive response that the newsletter received from the entire college community.  It has been a pleasure to represent the adjunct faculty of the West campus on the Union Executive Committee for the past three years.  However, over the summer I made a personal challenge to myself to expand my commitments at the college, to take on increased responsibilities, and to actively pursue new opportunities for leadership.  For this reason, I am seeking the role of Secretary.  It is my hope to further my role on the union committee, thereby increasing my service to the college and its faculty.  My previous leadership experiences at the college and on the union executive board make me uniquely prepared for this responsibility.  If elected, I would be the first adjunct faculty member to serve on the Faculty Union Executive Board in a college-wide elected position.  I look forward to serving the faculty in this increased capacity.

Central Campus Full-Time Faculty Representative: Elsa Rapp
If elected, I look forward to representing Central Campus faculty on the Faculty Union Executive Committee.    An important ingredient in developing strong contracts and good working conditions is bridging the gap between faculty and administration as we deal with issues like medical coverage, assessment, scheduling policies, etc.  I have had experience on the union Executive Committee as Vice President and feel that I can continue to help strengthen the union and protect the faculty in these difficult economic times.

Business and Computer Science Division Representative: Marie Hartlein
I have been the union representative for the Business and Computer Science Division over the three years.    During that time, I have enjoyed working within the Division and voicing our joint concerns at Executive Committee meetings.    Although I am a Computer Science faculty member, I hold an undergraduate degree in Business Education and my graduate degree is an MBA.    This education helps me understand the workload and challenges faced by the numerous disciplines within the Division.

Health Science Division Representative: Georgette Howell
Upon applying for my position in the Department of Exercise Science and Wellness, John Flynn asked my reason for wanting the full-time, tenure track position (really?) at Montgomery County Community College. I told him I was looking for a home and that is what I have found here. The end of this semester will mark the completion of my sixth year of service. During these six years I have always appreciated the lengths to which our Union leadership has strived to ensure our rights and adherence to the contract by administrators. The knowledge that I could give a call to Rhoda (and I have) or walk over to Rob Novelli (and I have) whenever there was a question or concern, was a part of the “home” I greatly appreciate.  I am grateful for our Union leadership and would like to serve as a part of the “team” that works so hard to keep us well represented when changes threaten our workplace wellbeing. Thank you for considering me for at the Health Sciences Division Union representative.

Librarian Representative: Lawrence Greene (incumbent)
I have faithfully and effectively served my first term as library faculty representative on the Union executive committee. In this capacity, the librarians’ work concerns have been my top priority and if re-elected I will continue to be a strong advocate. It has been an honor to represent such fine co-workers and I ask your indulgence to allow me to continue in this role.

Social Sciences Division Representative: Ryan Johnson (incumbent)
Over the past two years, I have been honored and proud to be the Social Science Division Representative. Since joining the Executive Committee, my direct participation in numerous Union activities has led me to become well versed in Union-related issues. I have represented our institution at AFT conferences and meetings, such as the spring national AFT conference. While there, I networked with other Union advocates to oppose the current nationwide assaults on our salaries and health care benefits. The seminars I attended and connections I made sharpened my negotiating skills and broadened my knowledge of Union initiatives and the local, state, and federal levels. Over the course of last summer, I served on the Union’s health care negotiating team in an effort to curb the significant financial burdens the College sought to place on us relating to our health care plans.  Through our work and with the support of our colleagues, we were able to maintain our high standard of health care benefits while limiting the increases in employee contributions. On an individual level, I brought to the Executive Committee every issue or complaint I received from our division, everything from scheduling concerns to student-related issues, to ensure our division was treated professionally and fairly.  As some of you have seen this semester, we must continue to vigilantly defend our classroom capacity limits, preventing students from being added beyond the contractual guidelines. Although Parkhouse Hall’s renovations are complete, as we continue to undergo significant construction projects in College Hall and beyond we must continue to advocate for better parking, safety, and working conditions at the Central Campus. Despite my primary location at the West Campus, my many visits to and meetings in Blue Bell over the years have kept me in touch and well informed regarding the problems our friends and colleagues face, regardless of location.  I am humbled and honored to be trusted with your voices regarding Union concerns, and I hope to be able to continue to advocate and advance the interests of our Division and the faculty as a whole. I feel my experience as the Social Sciences Division Representative over the past two years and enthusiasm for the position makes me an ideal candidate to continue to serve your Union interests.

Social Sciences Division Representative: Anna Raskin
I am a full-time history faculty member at the Montgomery County Community College. I have been with the college for six years now, and I greatly appreciate what our Union does for the faculty. We have one of the best retirement and medical plans in the region, in large part due to the active role the Union and its president, Rhoda McFadden play in the faculty’s affairs. As a social science representative, I will be actively involved in the Union’s work. As the Union’s representative, I will also do everything I can to ensure that the rights of the faculty are safeguarded, and all issues are resolved to the great satisfaction of the faculty members.

Part-Time Teaching Faculty Representative, West Campus: Tammy Hoffman-Jones

Immediately upon being hired as a part-time English instructor in the fall of 2000, I joined our Union because I believe strongly in the efforts of this collective group.  Throughout the past decade, I have attended meetings and have added my thoughts and votes to the Union. In addition, I have collaborated with other groups and committees at the College that give a voice to adjuncts. As a Senior Adjunct Instructor, I am running for the position of West Campus’s Part-Time faculty representative to further serve as a voice for adjuncts. I would appreciate your vote.
